Ring it

How to make your phone ring loudly on demand

The volume slider and the ringer switch both stand between you and hearing your phone. Here is what gets past them.

What overrides silent mode

  • Clap detection, rings at full volume regardless of the ringer switch, triggered by two claps, no other device required.
  • Find My Play Sound, overrides silent, but needs a second device or a browser and an internet connection on the lost phone.
  • Emergency and critical alerts, override silent by design, but you cannot trigger them yourself.

What does not

  • A normal phone call. Silenced by the ringer switch, which is the entire reason this is a problem.
  • Messages and app notifications. Suppressed the same way.
  • Alarms will sound on silent, but only at the time they are set for, which is no help right now.

Set it up before you need it

Every one of these methods has to exist before the phone goes missing. The one that takes ten seconds is arming clap detection and switching on Arm automatically, so it re-arms each time you open the app.

Common questions

Can I make my phone ring when it is on silent?

Yes. Clap detection rings the phone at full volume regardless of the ringer switch. Find My’s Play Sound also overrides silent, but requires a second device and an internet connection.

Do alarms go off when the phone is on silent?

Yes, alarms sound regardless of the ringer switch, but only at their set time, so they are not usable for finding a phone now.
