What you’re dealing with
The fastest method is the one built into your iPhone, the Ping Apple Watch button in Control Centre, but that needs the watch to be in Bluetooth or Wi-Fi range and it fails silently if you are in the wrong part of the house. A signal-strength sweep tells you which part of the house to be in.
| Broadcasts as | Apple Watch, or a rotating private address |
|---|---|
| Typical battery | 18 hours typical, 36+ on Ultra models, days in Power Reserve |
| Findable by scan | Yes, while powered on |
| Search window | Days to weeks |
Once the battery is gone: A watch that hits zero enters Power Reserve first, which keeps it minimally alive for a surprisingly long time before it goes fully silent.
Where it usually is
Bedside and under the bed
Watches come off at night and slide off the nightstand.
Bathroom shelf
Taken off before a shower and left there.
Gym locker and kit bag
Removed for a lift or a swim and put in the bag instead of back on the wrist.
Kitchen windowsill
Off for washing up, left by the sink.
How to search for it
- Check the last-seen map firstBefore you search a room, find out which building. A pin saves you from searching the right way in the wrong place.
- Scan from the middle of the roomNote everything that appears, then select the device you want so the rest of the list drops away.
- Walk and watch the signalSweep in a straight line, give each position a few seconds, and turn 90 degrees when the reading stops rising.
- Search inside things, not across themA strong signal with nothing visible means it is underneath or inside something. Fabric and metal block Bluetooth badly.
Tips specific to apple watch
- Ping it first from Control Centre. If you hear nothing, that tells you the watch is out of range, which is information, not failure.
- Use the last-seen map to pick the building, then walk the rooms with a live scan running.
- A watch on charge is a watch that will not be dead, check every charger in the house before assuming it is lost.

Common questions
Can I find my Apple Watch if it is out of battery?
Not live. Power Reserve keeps it partially alive well past the point the screen dies, so there is a longer window than people expect, but once it is truly flat you need the last-seen location instead.
Does this work if the watch is paired to someone else’s phone?
Yes for scanning. A Bluetooth scan reads broadcast advertisements and does not require the device to be paired to your phone.
