What you’re dealing with
It also broadcasts a genuinely useful name. Macs advertise their sharing name, so a scan in a shared office returns readable results rather than hex identifiers.
| Broadcasts as | The Mac’s sharing name, e.g. Maria’s MacBook Pro |
|---|---|
| Typical battery | Up to about 18 hours in use, weeks in sleep |
| Findable by scan | Yes, while powered on |
| Search window | Days to weeks |
Once the battery is gone: A sleeping Mac keeps its Bluetooth radio available for a long time. A fully shut-down one does not.
Where it usually is
A meeting room you used earlier
Closed, put on a chair, left behind when the room turned over.
Under a desk in a bag
The bag is where you left it; you are looking at the desk surface.
A shared house kitchen table
Moved by someone else to clear the table.
How to search for it
- Check the last-seen map firstBefore you search a room, find out which building. A pin saves you from searching the right way in the wrong place.
- Scan from the middle of the roomNote everything that appears, then select the device you want so the rest of the list drops away.
- Walk and watch the signalSweep in a straight line, give each position a few seconds, and turn 90 degrees when the reading stops rising.
- Search inside things, not across themA strong signal with nothing visible means it is underneath or inside something. Fabric and metal block Bluetooth badly.
Tips specific to macbook
- Rename the Mac to something you will recognise in a list of twenty. System Settings, General, About.
- A sleeping Mac stays discoverable for days, so a scan is worth running even if it went missing on Friday.

Common questions
Does the laptop lid have to be open?
No. A sleeping Mac with the lid closed still keeps the Bluetooth radio reachable, which is why it appears in scans long after you last used it.
Can this find a stolen laptop?
No. Bluetooth range is tens of metres. For a device that has left the building, Apple’s Find My and a police report are the route.
