How to find lost AirPods Pro

AirPods Pro have one advantage over the standard model when they are lost: the case has a speaker, so Apple’s own Find My can make it chime. That only helps if the case is what is missing.

What you’re dealing with

For a single lost earbud, the search is the same radio problem as any other Bluetooth device, with the added difficulty that the silicone tip makes it sit still in soft furnishings instead of rolling somewhere visible.

Once the battery is gone: Once an AirPod Pro is out of charge it stops advertising and disappears from every scanner. The last-seen record is what remains.

Where it usually is

Bedding

Pro tips grip fabric. An earbud that comes out during sleep tends to stay exactly where it landed, inside the duvet cover rather than on top of it.

Between desk and wall

The gap behind a desk against a wall is the highest-yield place to check in an office.

Coat hood

Earbuds fall backwards out of ears while a hood is up, and land in the hood itself.

  1. Check the last-seen map firstBefore you search a room, find out which building. A pin saves you from searching the right way in the wrong place.
  2. Scan from the middle of the roomNote everything that appears, then select the device you want so the rest of the list drops away.
  3. Walk and watch the signalSweep in a straight line, give each position a few seconds, and turn 90 degrees when the reading stops rising.
  4. Search inside things, not across themA strong signal with nothing visible means it is underneath or inside something. Fabric and metal block Bluetooth badly.

Tips specific to airpods pro

  • Take the other earbud out of range before you start, or you will be tracking the wrong signal.
  • If your ear tips are the foam third-party kind, expect the earbud to be muffled and lodged rather than loose, search inside things, not on surfaces.
  • Signal strength drops sharply through a mattress. If the reading is strong but you cannot see it, look under, not around.

Other things people lose

The same method applies to these, with different battery windows and different hiding places.

Common questions

Does the AirPods Pro case chime help?

Yes, when the case is what you have lost and it is within range of your Apple devices. It does nothing for a single earbud that is out of the case, which is the more common loss.

Why does the signal seem stronger in the wrong room?

Bluetooth reflects off walls and metal. A single strong reading in a doorway is often a reflection. Trust a rising trend over several seconds, not one spike.
