Once the battery is gone: A case that has fully drained stops charging the earbuds and stops broadcasting. Standby drain is slow, so a case lost this week is almost certainly still alive.

How to search for it
- Check the last-seen map firstBefore you search a room, find out which building. A pin saves you from searching the right way in the wrong place.
- Scan from the middle of the roomNote everything that appears, then select the device you want so the rest of the list drops away.
- Walk and watch the signalSweep in a straight line, give each position a few seconds, and turn 90 degrees when the reading stops rising.
- Search inside things, not across themA strong signal with nothing visible means it is underneath or inside something. Fabric and metal block Bluetooth badly.
Tips specific to airpods case
- Search at close range and be systematic. Because the closed case has such a short effective radius, a room-by-room sweep beats standing in the hallway hoping for a signal.
- Check the last-seen map first, then scan on arrival. Trying to find a weak transmitter by wandering is the slow way round.
- If a case appears in a scan, get closer and watch the signal climb, then open the lid, the earbuds inside will jump out at much higher strength and confirm you have the right one.

Common questions
Can an empty case be found at all?
With difficulty. An empty, closed case is the weakest signal in the AirPods family. Get within a few metres and it becomes detectable.
Does Apple’s Find My work for a case?
For newer AirPods Pro cases, yes, they can play a sound. For older and standard cases the support is thinner, which is why a Bluetooth scan is a useful second method.
