The silent phone problem

How to find your phone when it’s on silent

Every method for finding a lost phone assumes the phone can make a noise. On silent, that assumption is the whole problem.

Why calling it fails

The standard advice is to call your phone from another one. It works perfectly, right up until the ringer switch is off, at which point you get a phone vibrating quietly inside a cushion, in another room, under a duvet.

The second-order problem is that you often do not have another phone. You are alone, the laptop is not signed in, and the one device that could help you find it is the device you are looking for.

Method 1: clap twice

Clap detection sidesteps the ringer entirely. You arm it before you put the phone down, and when you clap twice the phone rings at full volume regardless of what the ringer switch says, and flashes the torch once the screen wakes.

  1. Open the Clap tab and grant microphone access.
  2. Tap Arm Clap Detection. Turn on Arm automatically so it re-arms every time you open the app.
  3. When the phone goes missing, clap twice, sharp, about half a second apart.
  4. Follow the ring, and the torch flash if the room is dark.

The catch is honest and worth stating: it has to be armed before the phone is lost. Arm automatically exists so you do not have to remember.

Method 2: Siri, if the phone can hear you

Saying “Hey Siri, where are you?” makes the phone respond out loud, and it works on silent. It needs Siri to be enabled for voice activation and the phone to be within earshot of your voice, which fails under a mattress or inside a bag more often than you would expect.

Method 3: Find My from another device

If you have a second Apple device or a browser, Find My can play a sound that overrides silent mode. It is the right tool when the phone is somewhere else in the world. It is a slow route when the phone is three metres away.

Where it actually is

  • In the sofa, not under it, phones fall through the gap at the back of the seat into the frame.
  • In the bed, inside a folded duvet or under a pillow.
  • In the bag you already checked, underneath a laptop.
  • In a coat hanging on the back of a door, in the room you are not in.
  • In the bathroom, on a shelf, face down.

Common questions

How do I find my iPhone on silent without another phone?

Arm clap detection in advance, then clap twice. The phone rings at full volume regardless of the ringer switch and flashes the torch. It needs no second device, no account and no internet connection.

Does clap detection work with Do Not Disturb on?

Yes. The alert is generated by the app on the device rather than delivered as a notification, so Focus modes and the ringer switch do not suppress it.

What if the phone does not respond to a clap?

Either it is out of earshot, it was not armed, or it is powered off. Move to another room and try again; if there is still nothing, use Find My from another device.
