How to find a device without creating an account

Locating a device around you is a local radio operation. It does not require an account, and an app that insists on one should have a reason.

When an account is genuinely necessary

There is one legitimate case: a crowd-sourced finding network. Apple’s Find My works because millions of other iPhones anonymously report sightings of your device, and that requires an identity to report to. If you want a device found by strangers’ phones in another city, you need an account.

When it is not

Scanning for what is around you needs no account at all. Your phone listens to broadcast advertisements, reads the names and signal strengths, and shows you the result. That is a local operation with no server involved.

The same is true of recording where your own phone last saw your own device. That history can live on the phone.

What to check before you install anything

  • The App Store privacy label. Data Not Collected means exactly that, and it is a declaration to Apple rather than marketing copy.
  • Which permissions are requested and why. Bluetooth for scanning and location for last-seen pins are proportionate; contacts and photos are not.
  • Whether a sign-up wall appears before you can use the core feature. That is usually about the business model rather than the technology.

Common questions

Do I need an account to scan for Bluetooth devices?

No. Scanning reads openly broadcast advertisements from nearby devices and is entirely local to your phone. Accounts are only technically necessary for crowd-sourced networks that let strangers’ phones report sightings of your device.

Does Find My Device₊ collect my data?

No. The App Store privacy label for the app is Data Not Collected. There is no account and your device list and location history stay on your iPhone.
