What you’re dealing with
Outdoor Bluetooth range is much better than indoor, so a sweep across an open field is genuinely effective in a way that a sweep across a house is not.
| Broadcasts as | DJI RC, DJI Goggles, and similar controller identifiers |
|---|---|
| Typical battery | Two to six hours in use, weeks on standby |
| Findable by scan | Yes, while powered on |
| Search window | Days to weeks |
Once the battery is gone: Controllers hold standby charge for weeks, which is why kit left in a field last month is still worth scanning for.
Where it usually is
The field you were flying in
Put down in long grass while changing a battery.
Car boot
Packed after the flight, still there.
Case compartments
In the case, in the compartment you did not open.
How to search for it
- Check the last-seen map firstBefore you search a room, find out which building. A pin saves you from searching the right way in the wrong place.
- Scan from the middle of the roomNote everything that appears, then select the device you want so the rest of the list drops away.
- Walk and watch the signalSweep in a straight line, give each position a few seconds, and turn 90 degrees when the reading stops rising.
- Search inside things, not across themA strong signal with nothing visible means it is underneath or inside something. Fabric and metal block Bluetooth badly.
Tips specific to drone controller
- Scan from the centre of an open area, with a clear line of sight you can cover far more ground than indoors.
- Save the controller in My Devices so the field itself gets pinned on the map next time.

Common questions
Will this find the drone itself?
Usually not. Most drones use a proprietary control link rather than standard Bluetooth. The controller, goggles and some accessories are the parts that appear in a scan.
