How to find a drone controller or accessory

Drone kit gets lost outdoors, in fields and car parks, spread across a bag with a dozen compartments. The controller and goggles are the parts with radios.

What you’re dealing with

Outdoor Bluetooth range is much better than indoor, so a sweep across an open field is genuinely effective in a way that a sweep across a house is not.

Typical batteryTwo to six hours in use, weeks on standby
Findable by scanYes, while powered on

Once the battery is gone: Controllers hold standby charge for weeks, which is why kit left in a field last month is still worth scanning for.

Where it usually is

The field you were flying in

Put down in long grass while changing a battery.

Car boot

Packed after the flight, still there.

Case compartments

In the case, in the compartment you did not open.

  1. Check the last-seen map firstBefore you search a room, find out which building. A pin saves you from searching the right way in the wrong place.
  2. Scan from the middle of the roomNote everything that appears, then select the device you want so the rest of the list drops away.
  3. Walk and watch the signalSweep in a straight line, give each position a few seconds, and turn 90 degrees when the reading stops rising.
  4. Search inside things, not across themA strong signal with nothing visible means it is underneath or inside something. Fabric and metal block Bluetooth badly.

Tips specific to drone controller

  • Scan from the centre of an open area, with a clear line of sight you can cover far more ground than indoors.
  • Save the controller in My Devices so the field itself gets pinned on the map next time.

Other things people lose

The same method applies to these, with different battery windows and different hiding places.

Common questions

Will this find the drone itself?

Usually not. Most drones use a proprietary control link rather than standard Bluetooth. The controller, goggles and some accessories are the parts that appear in a scan.
