How to identify or find a dash cam

Most dash cams pair with a phone app over Bluetooth to hand off the Wi-Fi connection for video download, which means they broadcast an identifiable name.

What you’re dealing with

That has two uses: finding one that has been removed and put somewhere, and identifying a camera in a vehicle you are travelling in.

Once the battery is gone: Parking mode keeps many cameras partly alive with the engine off, which is why one can still appear on a scan of a parked car.

Where it usually is

The glovebox

Removed from the screen and put away when the car was parked in public.

A drawer at home

Taken out for a sale or a service and never refitted.

Still on the windscreen

Behind the mirror, where you stopped noticing it.

  1. Check the last-seen map firstBefore you search a room, find out which building. A pin saves you from searching the right way in the wrong place.
  2. Scan from the middle of the roomNote everything that appears, then select the device you want so the rest of the list drops away.
  3. Walk and watch the signalSweep in a straight line, give each position a few seconds, and turn 90 degrees when the reading stops rising.
  4. Search inside things, not across themA strong signal with nothing visible means it is underneath or inside something. Fabric and metal block Bluetooth badly.

Tips specific to dash cam

  • A scan inside a vehicle will show the camera clearly at that range, it is one of the more reliable in-car detections.
  • Note that a scan cannot tell you whether a camera is recording, only that it is present and powered.

Other things people lose

The same method applies to these, with different battery windows and different hiding places.

Common questions

Can I detect a dash cam in a car I am in?

If it uses Bluetooth for app pairing and is powered, it will appear in a scan. Cameras that only use Wi-Fi or record locally with no radio will not.
