How to find a phone lost in the house

A phone lost in your own house is a search problem, not a technology problem. Doing it in the right order takes minutes instead of an hour.

Do these three things first

  1. Clap twice, if clap detection is armed. This ends the search immediately more often than anything else on this page.
  2. Ask Siri where she is. Free, instant, works on silent, fails only if the phone cannot hear you.
  3. Call it from another phone and stand still in silence in each room for ten seconds. Vibration on a hard surface carries further than you expect.

Then search by volume, not surface

People search a room by scanning surfaces with their eyes. Phones are almost never on a surface, if they were, you would have found it. They are inside something.

  • Sofa: take the cushions out, then reach into the frame at the back. The gap behind the seat is where phones go.
  • Bed: strip it. A phone in a folded duvet is invisible and inaudible.
  • Bags: empty them. Do not feel around; a phone under a laptop in a padded sleeve feels like nothing.
  • Coats: check every pocket of every coat, including the ones on the back of doors and in the wardrobe.
  • Car: between the seat and the centre console, and the footwell behind the driver’s seat.

The rooms people forget

The bathroom, the utility room, and any room you passed through rather than stayed in. A phone put down while carrying something with two hands ends up in a place you have no memory of standing.
