How to find lost AirPods Max

AirPods Max are almost never lost the way earbuds are. They are too big to fall out of a pocket unnoticed, so the failure mode is different: you take them off, put them down, and walk away.

What you’re dealing with

That makes this a places-and-last-seen problem rather than a signal-sweep problem, and the long standby battery means you usually have days rather than hours.

Typical batteryAbout 20 hours, weeks in the Smart Case low-power state
Findable by scanYes, while powered on

Once the battery is gone: The Smart Case drops them into a very low-power state rather than off, so a pair left somewhere last week is usually still detectable.

Where it usually is

Office and library desks

Taken off for a conversation and left on the desk when you moved rooms.

Overhead lockers

Big enough to be stowed rather than carried, which is how they get left on planes and trains.

The back seat of a car

Taken off on arrival and put down rather than into a bag.

  1. Check the last-seen map firstBefore you search a room, find out which building. A pin saves you from searching the right way in the wrong place.
  2. Scan from the middle of the roomNote everything that appears, then select the device you want so the rest of the list drops away.
  3. Walk and watch the signalSweep in a straight line, give each position a few seconds, and turn 90 degrees when the reading stops rising.
  4. Search inside things, not across themA strong signal with nothing visible means it is underneath or inside something. Fabric and metal block Bluetooth badly.

Tips specific to airpods max

  • Check the last-seen pin before you retrace anything, with a device this expensive, ruling out three buildings is worth more than searching one.
  • The Smart Case blocks signal noticeably. If the reading is weak but present, they are cased inside a bag.
  • Apple’s Find My covers AirPods Max properly, so use it first and treat a scan as the close-range follow-up.

Other things people lose

The same method applies to these, with different battery windows and different hiding places.

Common questions

Do AirPods Max work with Find My?

Yes, and it is the better first tool for them. A Bluetooth scan is what closes the last few metres once Find My has told you the building.

How long before they stop broadcasting?

In the Smart Case they sip power and stay reachable for a long time. Left out of the case with the battery run down, they go silent like anything else.
