How to find a lost GoPro or action camera

Action cameras get lost in exactly the environments where searching is hardest: fields, beaches, snow, boats, and bags with fifteen compartments.

What you’re dealing with

They do pair over Bluetooth with their phone apps, which means they broadcast a name that usually includes a serial number, useful when three people on the same trip own the same model.

Once the battery is gone: Standby drain is slow, so a camera lost on a trip last weekend is often still discoverable when you get home.

Where it usually is

Kit and camera bags

In a compartment you did not open, under a spare battery.

The vehicle you travelled in

Mounted, removed, put down on a seat.

Where you last mounted it

Helmet, handlebar, board. Mounts fail and the camera stays where it fell.

  1. Check the last-seen map firstBefore you search a room, find out which building. A pin saves you from searching the right way in the wrong place.
  2. Scan from the middle of the roomNote everything that appears, then select the device you want so the rest of the list drops away.
  3. Walk and watch the signalSweep in a straight line, give each position a few seconds, and turn 90 degrees when the reading stops rising.
  4. Search inside things, not across themA strong signal with nothing visible means it is underneath or inside something. Fabric and metal block Bluetooth badly.

Tips specific to gopro or action camera

  • Outdoors the range is far better than indoors, sweeping an open field with a scan running genuinely works.
  • Note the serial in the broadcast name so you can tell yours from the identical models around you.
  • If the camera is in a waterproof housing, expect a weaker signal; the housing attenuates noticeably.

Other things people lose

The same method applies to these, with different battery windows and different hiding places.

Common questions

Does a GoPro broadcast when it is switched off?

Not when fully off. Standby is different, the radio remains reachable, which is why a camera you thought was off often still appears.
