How to identify a soundbar on Bluetooth

Soundbars are rarely lost. They are, however, one of the top three reasons people run a Bluetooth scan and find something they cannot account for.

What you’re dealing with

Because they are mains powered they broadcast continuously, and because Bluetooth passes through walls easily you will routinely pick up the ones in neighbouring flats.

Once the battery is gone: Mains powered means permanently discoverable, which is why soundbars turn up in scans day and night.

Where it usually is

Your own living room

Check the obvious before assuming anything.

Through a party wall

The single most common source of a persistent unknown device in a flat.

The flat above or below

Bluetooth passes through floors as readily as walls.

  1. Check the last-seen map firstBefore you search a room, find out which building. A pin saves you from searching the right way in the wrong place.
  2. Scan from the middle of the roomNote everything that appears, then select the device you want so the rest of the list drops away.
  3. Walk and watch the signalSweep in a straight line, give each position a few seconds, and turn 90 degrees when the reading stops rising.
  4. Search inside things, not across themA strong signal with nothing visible means it is underneath or inside something. Fabric and metal block Bluetooth badly.

Tips specific to soundbar or tv audio

  • Note the time pattern. A device present in the evening and gone overnight belongs to a household on a schedule, not to a tracker.
  • Walk to the wall and watch the signal. If it peaks against a wall and drops as you step away, the source is on the other side of it.
  • Soundbars advertise brand and model plainly, so identification is usually instant.

Other things people lose

The same method applies to these, with different battery windows and different hiding places.

Common questions

Why does a soundbar show up when my TV is off?

Soundbars stay on standby with the radio live so they can be woken by a remote or a phone. Standby is not off.
