How to find a lost Fitbit

Fitbits come off wrists at night and in changing rooms, and they are small, dark and matte, the worst possible combination for finding something visually in a dim room.

What you’re dealing with

They do broadcast a clear model name over Bluetooth Low Energy, so a scan reads Charge 6 rather than a hex string.

Broadcasts asCharge 5, Charge 6, Inspire 3, Versa, Sense
Typical batteryAbout 5 to 10 days depending on model
Findable by scanYes, while powered on

Once the battery is gone: Multi-day battery means the window for a live scan is generous compared with earbuds.

Where it usually is

In the bed

Bands unclip during sleep. Strip the bed rather than looking at it.

Gym changing room bench and locker

Taken off for a swim.

The bathroom

Off before a shower and left on a shelf.

  1. Check the last-seen map firstBefore you search a room, find out which building. A pin saves you from searching the right way in the wrong place.
  2. Scan from the middle of the roomNote everything that appears, then select the device you want so the rest of the list drops away.
  3. Walk and watch the signalSweep in a straight line, give each position a few seconds, and turn 90 degrees when the reading stops rising.
  4. Search inside things, not across themA strong signal with nothing visible means it is underneath or inside something. Fabric and metal block Bluetooth badly.

Tips specific to fitbit

  • The band and the tracker can separate on some models, you may be looking for a piece much smaller than you think.
  • Search bedding by feel with the phone in your other hand watching signal, not by eye.

Other things people lose

The same method applies to these, with different battery windows and different hiding places.

Common questions

Does the Fitbit app find a lost tracker?

It shows a last-synced location, which is a starting point rather than a search tool. A live signal sweep is what closes the final distance.
