How to find something in the dark

Most night-time searches fail for the same reason: people turn on the main light, which is the worst possible tool for finding a small object.

Use a low, raking beam instead of the ceiling light

An overhead light casts light straight down and eliminates the shadows that make small objects visible. A torch held at floor level throws long shadows across the carpet and makes anything raised stand out immediately.

Lie down and shine along the floor. It looks ridiculous and it works better than anything else in this article.

Sound and light beat looking

  • If it is your phone, clap detection rings it at full volume and flashes the torch, which gives you a visual target through bedding and under furniture.
  • If it is a Bluetooth device, follow the signal rather than searching visually, in the dark, radio does not care about the light.
  • Reflective surfaces catch a torch beam: screens, metal, lenses. Sweep for glints before sweeping for shapes.

Do not turn the room upside down at 3am

Search fatigue is worse when you are tired, and the failure rate of a night search is high enough that most things found at 3am were also findable at 8am with a tenth of the effort. If it can wait, let it.
