Lost in a restaurant or bar

How to find something you left in a restaurant or bar

The single most useful fact about venue lost property: the table gets cleared and swept at close, so the item is often not found until hours after you notice it missing.

What to do, in order

  1. Call, but call back after close, Staff will check the table and find nothing if the item has slid under a bench. It surfaces during the end-of-service sweep.
  2. Give the table and the time, Venues work from table numbers and service times, not from descriptions alone.
  3. Go back in person if it matters, Items behind a bar are rarely logged in any system, and a description in person gets a better search than one over the phone.

Where it usually turns up

  • Under the bench or banquette: Where phones and wallets go when you stand up.
  • Behind a radiator or a booth cushion: Slipped down and out of sight.
  • The coat you hung on the back of the chair: In the pocket, still on the chair.

Worth knowing

  • A last-seen pin timestamped at the venue rules out the walk home, which is otherwise where people spend the evening searching.
