Lost in a cinema or theatre

How to find something you left in a cinema or theatre

The room is cleaned between screenings and anything found goes to a front-of-house box, so the window between your screening ending and the next one starting is the one that matters.

What to do, in order

  1. Go straight back to the screen, If the next screening has not started, staff will usually let you check your row. This resolves most cases immediately.
  2. Ask front of house, not the box office, Cleaning staff hand items to front of house, and they are rarely logged anywhere formal.
  3. Give the screen number and seat, It is the only detail that makes a search possible in a dark room.

Where it usually turns up

  • Under your own seat: Fell out of a pocket when you sat down.
  • The cup holder: Phones go in and stay when the lights come up.
  • The row in front: Slid forward under the seat during the film.

Worth knowing

  • Phones on silent are the classic loss here. Clap detection is the fastest resolution if you are still in the building, it rings at full volume regardless of the ringer switch.
