How to find something you left at the gym

The gym is the highest-loss environment most people pass through weekly: things come off, go into bags, and get left in a locker that is not yours by the evening.

Act in the first hour

Gym losses have a short recovery window. Kit gets tidied at the end of the day and reception lost property is emptied on a schedule. Going back the same evening is worth far more than going back tomorrow.

Check the map before you go back

A last-seen pin answers the question that actually matters: did you lose it at the gym, or in the car on the way home? Those are two completely different searches and people routinely run the wrong one.

On site, in this order

  1. Your locker, and the two either side of it.
  2. The bench in front of the lockers, and underneath it.
  3. The last machine or rack you used, earbuds come out during a set and stay on the floor.
  4. The shower area shelf.
  5. Reception lost property, which is where staff put anything found on the floor.

Then scan

If it is still in the building and still has charge, a Bluetooth scan will pick it up. Walk the changing room and the floor slowly with the scan running rather than standing at the entrance.
