Troubleshooting

Almost every issue in this app comes down to a permission or a device that is not powered on.

Nothing appears in a scan

  1. Check Bluetooth permission in Settings, Privacy and Security, Bluetooth.
  2. Check your own Bluetooth is enabled in Settings rather than just Control Centre.
  3. Wait a full sixty seconds, low-power devices advertise infrequently.
  4. Move closer. Ten to thirty metres indoors is realistic; through two floors is not.

Clap detection does not trigger

  1. Check that it is armed. It has to be armed before the phone is put down.
  2. Check microphone permission in Settings, Privacy and Security, Microphone.
  3. Clap twice, sharply, about half a second apart. A single clap is ignored deliberately.
  4. Try from closer. A phone inside a bag inside a wardrobe may not hear you.

The map has no pins

  1. Location permission has to be granted for positions to be recorded.
  2. Only saved devices are logged. Save a device under My Devices first.
  3. Pins appear when your phone next detects that device, there is no history from before you saved it.

A device shows no battery level

Battery is only shown when the device broadcasts it, which is optional in the Bluetooth specification. Many budget tags, older speakers and car systems do not, and the field is simply blank for those.

Common questions

Why does a device disappear and reappear in the list?

Low-power devices advertise at intervals to save battery, so they blink in and out. That is normal.

The app cannot find a device I know is here.

It is either powered off, inside something that blocks the signal such as metal or a full bag, or does not use Bluetooth Low Energy at all, which is the case for infrared remotes and standard car key fobs.
