What you’re dealing with
Where Tile’s own app can fall short is in the last few metres. It will tell you the tag is nearby; a raw signal-strength readout tells you which direction to walk.
| Broadcasts as | Tile, Tile_xxxx |
|---|---|
| Typical battery | One to three years depending on model; some have replaceable cells |
| Findable by scan | Yes, while powered on |
| Search window | Days to weeks |
Once the battery is gone: Tile batteries last years, so a lost Tile is essentially always still broadcasting.
Where it usually is
Whatever it is attached to
A Tile is rarely lost alone. Find the keyring, the bag or the wallet and you have found the Tile.
Sofa and car seats
Same physics as everything else small and flat.
How to search for it
- Check the last-seen map firstBefore you search a room, find out which building. A pin saves you from searching the right way in the wrong place.
- Scan from the middle of the roomNote everything that appears, then select the device you want so the rest of the list drops away.
- Walk and watch the signalSweep in a straight line, give each position a few seconds, and turn 90 degrees when the reading stops rising.
- Search inside things, not across themA strong signal with nothing visible means it is underneath or inside something. Fabric and metal block Bluetooth badly.
Tips specific to tile tracker
- Scan for the name Tile. It is one of the clearest signatures in Bluetooth.
- If the Tile is broadcasting but you cannot find it, it is inside something, signal drops sharply through leather, fabric and a full bag.

Common questions
Can I find a Tile without a Tile account?
A Bluetooth scanner will detect and follow the signal without any account, because the tag broadcasts openly. The community-find network is the part that requires Tile’s own service.
